Ships will be able to use a new high-speed communications network from December to triple data transmission rates over broadband. KVH Industries intends to deliver a high-speed overlay to its current mini-VSAT Broadband service using Intelsat’s new EpicNG satellites.
KVH will use spot beams of high throughput Ku-band that is hosted from the EpicNG satellites. It will also use the IntelsatOne Flex platform to deliver the high-speed overlay to its mini-VSAT Broadband. KVH expects the spot beams will be able to deliver bandwidth of up to 10 Mbps to each terminal on vessels.
KVH chief operating officer Brent Bruun said vessel owners would be able to easily upgrade existing hardware, including the TracPhone V7-IP series of VSAT terminals.
“We expect to provide our maritime customers with increased data speeds at the same price points as our current service, while offering unparalleled coverage on a global basis,” he said.
In another deal, KVH has expanded its Asian coverage of mini-VSAT Broadband by using more capacity on the Sky Perfect JSAT network, which includes a fleet of 17 satellites.
